Brown Wood-Owl

Large, solemn-looking brown owl with deep black eyes. Varies in plumage throughout its extensive range but always has a dark-bordered pale face, fine barring on wings and underparts, and sooty areas around the eyes. Inhabits lowland and montane broadleaf forests and adjacent edges. Gives a short burst of loud, reverberating hoots.

The brown wood owl lives in the tropical and temperate forests of southern and Southeast Asia. They prefer dense forests with mature trees, where they can find shelter and prey.

In Sri Lanka, the Brown Wood Owl primarily feeds on a diet consisting of small mammals, birds, and reptiles such as rodents, lizards, and small squirrels, as it is a nocturnal hunter and relies on the cover of darkness to catch its prey.
